Night Noises
I hear beams creaking in the attic,
a cat jumping to the floor,
distant whirring sounds (in late summer),
maybe a flurry of barking from fretful dogs
or the intermittent rush of cars on the interstate.
Sometimes there is heavy rain pounding above,
thunder shaking the house and the sky,
burning logs shifting in the wood stove,
the old refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
